Jonathan Brownlee breaks elbow during bike crash at Leeds WTCS

Jonathan Brownlee has broken his elbow after a bike crash at the Leeds WTCS race in Roundhay park yesterday afternoon.
The local hero was brought down by Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Hayden Wilde, who has admitted fault and passed on his sincere apologies to Brownlee as well as his teammate Alex Yee and Wilde’s teammate Dylan Mulloch, all of whom DNF’d because of the incident.

Wilde meanwhile was able to continue racing and win his first WTCS event.

Posting on his Instagram page, Brownlee shared an image of himself sat in hospital with his left arm in a sling. He also wrote, “I know these happen in sport but the racing is definitely getting more dangerous and it is down to a select few athletes. We need to look after each other better.”

Alex Yee on the 2022 Leeds WTCS crash
Two-time Olympic medallist and 2022 Yokohama WTCS winner Yee faired better in the crash, posting to his Instagram stories a selfie from inside a lift, explaining that his bike and helmet had cracked but fortuitously no bones. He then wished Jonny his best.
Dylan McCullough on the 2022 Leeds WTCS crash
At time of print, Dylan McCullough was yet to provide an update on his condition, but he was seen in Roundhay Park post-crash with a bandage around his right calf.

Post-race Wilde took to Instagram to share his mixed feelings on the incident, saying, “One side was absolutely pumped to have won my first world series event the other was gutted for my friends and competitors. As I’ve said I’m truly sorry for being a part of the high-speed crash with @lixsanyee @dylanmccullough_ and @jonnybrownleetri I wish you all a very speedy recovery.”
