Hansom smashes Sandman record
Records tumble at Sandman Triathlon, with Jane Hansom and Oliver Simon taking gold
Jane Hansom knocked a whopping 15 minutes off the women’s course record at the third annual Sandman Triathlon last weekend, which saw new course records set across every discipline as the sun shone on nearly a thousand triathletes in Newborough Forest, north Wales.
The fastest finisher in the female sprint event was Claire Antrobus with a superb time of 1:13.46, well ahead of second-placed Jane Morris, with third going to Rachel Massey. The male sprint event was won convincingly by Huw Brassington (winner of this year’s Slateman) in a new record time of 1:01.11.
In the women’s full-distance event (1km swim/60km bike/10km trail run), Hansom overtook 2013 Slateman winner Rhian Roxburgh on the run to claim victory in a time of 2:45:23 – five minutes ahead of second-placed Roxburgh. Helen Talbot claimed bronze with 2:57:44.
In the men’s event, Tenby-based athlete Oliver Simon won with a time of 2:26:27, followed by last year’s winner Peter Brook (2:30:00), and 2012 Snowman winner Ewan Brown taking bronze shortly afterwards with a time of 2:30:36.
The next event in the north Wales-based Always Aim Tri series is the Snowman Triathlon (www.snowmantri.com), which takes place in Snowdonia on 6 October.
