Brownlees to get shot at larger prize in Abu Dhabi

$60k prize offered for short course at UAE's largest triathlon

The prize purse for the short course of this year’s Abu Dhabi International Triathlon has been expanded to $60k, giving Britain’s Alistair Brownlee even more reason to race hard when he goes up against younger brother Jonathan next month.

The male and female winners of this year’s short course will both receive $15k, with other elites confirmed to attend including Aussies Annabel Luxford and Lisa Marangon, Germany’s Svenja Bazlen and French athletes Jessica Harrison and Tony Moulai. The short course involves some unusual distances: a 1.5km swim will be followed by a 100km bike and 10km run, with Alistair Brownlee and Edith Niederfriniger (ITA) winning last year.

The increase in funds for the short course has meant a decrease for the long course, being contested by 2013 Ironman world champion Frederik Van Lierde and Eneko Llanos (ESP) among others. This year the male and female winners of the long course will receive $40k each, compared to the $50k they received last year. This year’s Abu Dhabi International Triathlon will take place on Saturday 15 March.

Who do you think will win in Abu Dhabi this year – Alistair or Jonny? Freddy or Eneko? Let us know in the comments below!
