British paratriathletes scoop three golds in Italy
Jane Egan, Melissa Reid and Dave Ellis post convincing wins at Iseo – Franciacorta ITU World Paratriathlon Event in Lombardy
Team GB took home three gold medals from the Iseo – Franciacorta ITU World Paratriathlon Event in northern Italy last weekend, with Dave Ellis and Melissa Reid both winning the PT5 category and Jane Egan clinching the PT1.
Dave Ellis won his race by nearly a minute after overhauling teammate Chris Goodwin, who has beaten him at the last two events. Goodwin picked up an excellent silver medal by overhauling Vasyl Zakrevskyi (UKR) in the final stages of the run to beat him by 11secs.
Jane Egan was a convincing winner in the women’s PT1 category, thanks to a dominant swim which gave her an unassailable 5min lead over Italian rival Rita Cuccuru. Melissa Reid posted an even more comfortable win in the women’s PT5 category, crossing the line 10mins ahead of nearest rival Zsofia Lengyel (HUN).
The International Triathlon Union revealed at the end of last week that three medal events have now been agreed for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games: men’s PT1 and PT4 classes and women’s PT4 class. There still remain another three categories still to be agreed by the ITU together with the International Olympic Committee, including one men’s event and two women’s events.
