British juniors finish season with a bang

Gordon Benson leads homegrown one-two in men's race

Eton Dorney hosted the last ETU Junior European Cup last weekend, with Britain’s Gordon Benson winning the men’s title and Sophie Coldwell coming third in the women’s race.

After a strong swim Benson put in a fast transition to exit T1 in the lead. Despite losing the initiative to teammate Miles Burton during the bike leg, Benson overhauled him to cross the line in 56:11mins. Grant Sheldon (GBR) came second in 56:16mins, with Italy’s Dalien Stateff third (56:27mins).

Benson commented after the race: “It was a good race, everyone worked well on the bike and that was what I wanted, we stayed away and then went for it on the run. I came here to qualify and to take away a win is a bonus.”

In the women’s race, Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) put in a polished performance to claim victory in 1:02:39 – but only beating Australia’s Jaz Hedgeland by two seconds. Britain’s Sophie Coldwell claimed third place with a time of 1:02:58 – her second podium in three weeks.

Coldwell was also crowned women’s British Triathlon Junior Super Series champion, whilst Christopher Perham took the men’s title.
