Ryzon Thermal Longsleeve Jersey review

Ryzon's Thermal Longsleeve Jersey sits near the top of the market in terms of price, but what about performance?

220 Triathlon Verdict

Damn expensive, but beautifully crafted and feels like a cosy hug. Score 84%

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Very comfortable
  • Stable, spacious pockets

Cons

  • High price
  • Tight around the waist

That’s one hell of a price tag. At $230 / £210, the Ryzon Signature Thermal Jersey is a very expensive cycling jersey. But past experience with this brand tells me that premium performance typically accompanies such a cost. That plays out here, too.

Unlike the other tops featured in our recent test of the best cycling jerseys, the Ryzon option is a long-sleeved one. Why? Well, because when you’re heading out on the bike at 6am, there’s often still a chill in the air even in summer.

Despite the use of the word ‘thermal’ in the product name, this jersey is actually aimed for  temperatures between 10°C and 20°C, so it’s very much a garment you could be reaching for all year round.

My testing took place through February, including sessions indoors and outside on sunny days around 10°C. It’ll come as no surprise that it’s a little warm for days when the mercury is rising, but it certainly felt at home in the prescribed temperature range.

The jersey isn’t windproof, so if there’s a cool breeze on a sunny day, it can help keep you nice and cool. Meanwhile, moisture wicking is pretty good, though there’s understandably not as much breathability as something  thinner. That said, the internal fabric feels luxuriously soft and comfortable against the skin.

Ryzon Thermal Longsleeve Jersey sizing and fit

This is the only jersey that I didn’t get in a large, based on the sizing calculator on the Ryzon website and, while it fits  comfortably and snugly (and the sleeves  are plenty long enough), there’s not much give around the waist hem, and I did hear a couple of stitches start to strain when zipping up. Given that, I’d err on the larger size if you’re caught between two.

There’s not quite as much stretch as you get with many other jerseys, but freedom of movement is still unhindered away from the waist hem.

That applies to the pockets, too, which took everything I wanted them to, but there wasn’t much stretch to play with  there. The benefit of this is that it stabilises the load well, so there wasn’t any bouncing.

You get three jersey pockets and a zip pocket, with the latter fitting an iPhone 15. However, the zip pull tab is a little slimline for use with thicker gloves and the pockets themselves are shallower than anything else I’ve tested.

What else can I say? Well, the silicone gripper around the waist hem appears fairly standard, but it seemed to work well in testing. There’s a full-length zip guard to boost comfort, too. It works well and is nice and thick, so it helps fend off cold breezes as they try and get through the zip. Meanwhile, the collar sits reasonably high to help with thermal efficiency, but I did find it a little too tight for my liking.
