Hoka Clifton run shoes review
It’s their lightest shoe yet, but can the Clifton wow our reviewer?
For the past year, Hoka’s led the charge against the minimalist movement, creating a range of oversized and overcushioned shoes for road and trail. The Cliftons are in the former camp and pitched as its lightest shoe yet.
The stack height of 29mm heel and 24mm forefoot is certainly scant compared to a shoe like the Hoka Bondi 3’s 33mm/29mm combo, and is reflected in the ride, which is far less cushioned than other Hokas we’ve tried.
In fact, despite featuring Hoka’s rocking geometry, the transition between landing and toe-off is surprisingly flat. Breathability’s proficient, thanks to the mesh composition of the shoes’ uppers, though we’ve read that a few users have had durability issues.
That doesn’t apply to us, but it’s something to be aware of. All in all, some might love that racer-type flattish feel but, for us, you’d go for Hokas for their über-comfortable and cushioned ride, and that’s lacking in the Cliftons.
