Inov-8 Performance Hybrid Jacket review

The Inov-8 Performance Hybrid Jacket looks expensive, but the huge versatility makes the price tag seem a bargain

The hybrid title of Inov-8’s Performance Hybrid jacket stems from its ability to be both warm and breathable in wintry conditions.

This it handles with aplomb. The insulated fleece panels from Primaloft and Pertex Quantum Air outer shell strike the sweetspot of ventilation and cosiness, with a welcome ability to deflect chilly breezes. At £150 / $175, that’s no bad thing.

Run and hike in the same jacket

The Lake District-hailing brand place this materials in both their trail running and hiking collections, and it’s a jacket that I’ve successfully used for hiking, football coaching, commuting and casual wear.

As for road and trail running, its build makes it ideal for getting out of the door on cold mornings and evenings.

The Primaloft panels located on the head, neck, shoulders, upper arms, stomach and back offer plenty of warmth. Yet at the same time the Pertex outer shell doesn’t impede ventilation.

Inov-8 Performance Hybrid vs OMM Fleece Jacket

Thanks to the Primaloft, the Performance Hybrid reminds me of my much-used and much-loved OMM Fleece Jacket (£120).

The Inov-8 has the benefits of more wind- and light rain-stopping powers, however, while also looking more stylish than the geography teacher-esque design of the OMM.

The OMM is 140g lighter, although it lacks the Inov-8’s massively snug, insulated hood, which neatly folds down into a cosy collar.

There’s also a peak on the hood that helps deflect precipitation from venturing onto your face or inside the garment.

Although the outer shell beads water impressively, it wouldn’t be my pick for activities likely to witness prolonged rain or anything heavier than light showers.

The close yet unrestrictive fit does mean that a waterproof shell will sit comfortably over the top of the Performance Hybrid Jacket, however.

Clever thumb loops and side storage

Classy features abound, including comfortable thumb loops that help warm your hands and prevent chilly breezes escaping up the sleeves.

The two side pockets are also sizeable and both easy to access and swift to undo/do up, while a neat internal mesh insert helps you organise your essentials within.

Inov-8 claim that the jacket is made from recycled materials, although they don’t tell us how much.

I found the navy/blue version on test preferable to the alternative black version for both style and visibility, the latter heightened by both jackets’ reflective outer shell.
