Olympic swimmer helps The Magic5 design new limited edition goggles – and I tried them out

Think you have enough goggles? Well so did I... That is, until I found out The Magic5 were collaborating with an Olympian to bring out a new limited edition release.

Think you have enough goggles? Well so did I… That is, until I found out The Magic5 were collaborating with an Olympian to bring out a new limited edition release.

The Magic5 have worked with Polish five-time Olympic Swimmer Katarzyna ‘Kasia’ Wasick to collaborate on a new limited edition version of their best-selling bespoke swim goggles.

Featuring a funky colour way and the brand’s signature shape and fit, I was lucky enough to try them out once they became available.

Made-to-measure goggles

But first up, a quick recap for anyone who hasn’t already tried The Magic5 goggles. These work by using an app to scan your face (easily accessed via your mobile phone).

The scan is then used to determine how the contours of your face sit to create a pair of goggles that are made especially for you.

I’ve had these for a few years now yet am still amazed by the quality of fit. The gaskets are small and low-profile and sit on my face perfectly, creating a seal without the need to ‘smoosh’ them (technical term!) against my eye sockets before I swim.

New limited edition design

The good news about this process is that once your face has been scanned it stays on The Magic5’s system, so my new goggles could be ordered quickly from my original details. I also knew from previous replacements that they’d fit me perfectly.

Around a week later, the goggles were here. So what are they like?

The limited edition ‘Kasia’ goggles featuring a red-orange mirrored lens, with the tint designed for enhanced indoor visibility. Kasia is a pool swimmer, after all, so that comes as no surprise.

In my local pool I found the tint did a great job of sharpening everything and I didn’t have any obscured areas in my vision.

They were pleasant to swim with too. My pet hates are goggle tints that make everything either dingy or Smurf blue – and thanks to the warm tint, these did neither.

I couldn’t resist trying them outdoors too, as most of my swims are in a lake during the summer. Here I found they worked well, although on a bright sunny day I did see some small orange flashes on the corner of the lenses. No biggie though and we’ll forgive that has these aren’t marketed for open water.

Fit and adjustability

The red and white strap is another feature of this limited edition and while I know it doesn’t really make a difference, I liked the funky look of them.

A single clip with a split strap makes adjusting the goggles easy before swimming (though not on the fly). For these photos I’m wearing them on top of my swim cap so you can see the details, but for swimming I’d usually wear the strap underneath for security.

With the strap under my swim cap they passed the dive test admirably and, like all The Magic5 goggles, didn’t see any water ingress. Admittedly they look a little bit strange, but you can’t argue with the fit.

The goggles also come with a good quality zipped hard case.

Conclusion

So – do I need these goggles? For £75 they’re not a cheap option but if you want goggles that are made to measure and fit perfectly, then they’re worth it in my opinion, especially if you haven’t tried this brand before.

Of course the draw here is the limited edition colour way and link to an Olympian. These are no bad thing and I loved the performance of the lenses and the look of them overall.

Would I invest in them though? Well, I likely don’t need another pair if I’m honest, but I’d definitely be tempted!
