Cons

  • Legs can roll up

Just 5 years ago, Luca Kuhn set out to revolutionise women’s cycling apparel by creating garments designed specifically for women. She wanted to empower women in the saddle so I was excited to test the Luca Road All-In-One bib shorts (£175) and they really are impressive.

Luca Women’s Signature Road All-In-One fit and sizing

These bib shorts offer all the benefits of traditional shorts but with the added benefits of women-specific design features — most noticeably the straps and cut. Using Italian fabrics and made in Portugal with a mixture of stitched and bonded seams, the cut of the garment provides a beautiful tailored fit throughout. No gaping, no bulging – just the correct amount of fabric in the right places.

The sizing is true to size, perhaps even slightly generous. The simple design with white stripes running from the knee, up over the hip to the nape of the neck creates an athletic look with the added benefits of enhanced visibility through the reflective print technology used.

The upper body features are where these bib shorts really excel. Crafted with a streamlined cross over front and sleek racer back design you get unparalleled comfort coupled with freedom of movement. No slipping of straps or fiddling to get a comfortable position around the breasts. The bonded edges around the arms ensure no chafing from any seams.

Additionally, the extra modesty provided by the overlapping front provides versatility: no need for a jersey for turbo sessions or spin classes and the option to ride with just a jacket on cooler days reducing the need for layers.

The comfort pad is constructed from recycled materials including bamboo fibres and charcoal to create an eco- conscious pad with anti-bacterial properties. The result is a thinner, less rigid pad but without any compromise on comfort for the rear on long rides. The leg length is on the longer side fitting well around the thighs and the openings are held in place by grippers lining the raw cut edges.

My only criticism is that they are not quite as extensive as they could be and I did notice some rolling up at times. The fabric is moisture-wicking so no fear of overheating despite the more substantial upper body design and with the additional UV protection you can remain cool, comfortable and protected on sunny rides.

Whilst in no way detracting from their position as a solid pair of cycling bib shorts, the design (sympathetic to female modesty) coupled with the lighter chamois does mean that you could use these bib shorts for a duathlon – ideal if you are new to the sport and don’t want to invest in a tri-suit just yet!

Luca has created bib shorts that I felt strong, confident and supported in. Sarah Broadley
