Lezyne Micro Drive 800+ front light review

Lezyne pitches the Micro Drive 800+ as a versatile front bike light: can it illuminate dark trails and suit everyday riding?

The Micro Drive 800+ is part of Lezyne’s revamped bike lights range with a variety of brightness modes covering recreational riding and more challenging conditions.

With 800 lumens on the highest setting and costing £60 / $59.99, it’s aimed at those looking for a do-it-all light.

A sleek and robust CNC-machined aluminium body houses a new optimised lens with eight LEDs, designed for “maximum visibility”.

Lezyne claims the Micro Drive 800+ has an IPX7 waterproof rating. Paired with ‘heat sink technology’ to improve heat dissipation, this light is built to withstand serious abuse.

It charges (at impressive speed) via the waterproof USB-C port just underneath the beam.

Lezyne doesn’t provide a cable, which I applaud. With USB-C now the EU-mandated mobile phone charging standard, who needs more cables cluttering up draws or going to landfill?

Best for round handlebars

The mount comes with a rubber strap that clips around your bars. It did fit around the integrated cockpit on my road bike, and I even managed to bodge it onto some Profile Design tri base bars.

But it’s predominantly designed for round handlebars. You can also remove and replace with a GoPro adapter for out-front mounting.

I have found some Lezyne products, such as its GPS computers, to be somewhat overengineered in the past. But the Micro Drive 800+ is advanced where it needs to be and very easy to use.

One long press of the single button on top of the unit, which is big enough to operate even wearing very thick gloves, turns the unit on and off.

The six settings are Economy, Enduro, Blast, Day Flash, Femto and Pulse.

If you need to light up trails or unlit paths and turn the power right down to avoid dazzling others, a very long press changes between economy and blast modes.

Lezyne lights have incorporated this feature for some time, and I’m glad it remains.

The beam on its highest setting is bright enough to light up unlit country lanes at night. For partially lit areas or urban riding you won’t need it.

In addition, the shape of the beam is focused. This enabled me to confidently navigate the road at speed while avoiding potholes and debris. The day flash mode is also very bright and will enhance your visibility in daylight hours.

Impressive run time

Battery life is excellent and better than Lezyne’s outgoing Micro Drive range, with up to two hours on Blast and 30 hours on Femto mode.

That covers the longest off-season night ride your partner or spouse would let you get away with. If you’re into touring then it’s compatible with Lezyne’s Infinite Light Power Pack+ (£88) too.

Lezyne Micro Drive 800+ bottom line

Overall, the Micro Drive 800+ is a seriously impressive, versatile light that’s ideal for any riding situation apart from technical mountain bike trails at night.

The battery life is great, it’s really easy to mount and use, and the beam shape is clear and focused.
