Xterra announces change of venue for Worlds Champs
For the first time in 25 years, the Xterra World Championship will move away from Hawaii to a new location. Here's what you need to know
Xterra has announced that the World Championship will move away from Maui, Hawaii, for the first time in 25 years.
The off-road triathlon has been synonymous with the Pacific island for much of its history, with Flora Duffy recently winning her sixth title there in December.
But it’s set for pastures new in 2022, with the event due to take place in Trentino, Italy, on 1 October 2022. And it’ll be on the move in the years that follow, too.
Speaking of the move, Xterra VP of Operations and Global Marketing J-D Cousens said: “Our vision is to rotate Xterra Worlds through all continents, from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Americas.”
“This will allow our wonderful sport to reach uncharted territories, welcome new warriors into our global community, and provide a wide variety of unique endurance challenges to our athletes from around the world.”
Trentino, known for its beautiful natural environment and home to the Brenta Dolomites, hosted the inaugural Xterra Trentino Dolomiti Paganella events in September last year in partnership with Europe Triathlon.
The new setting for the 2022 World Champs will prove a beautiful and challenging battleground, and is notably on the doorstep of the many Xterra athletes. In fact, Europe is home to the largest collection of Xterra athletes and events on the planet, the company says.
“Maui is our birthplace, we will return one day, and we are forever grateful to our hosts, partners, crew, and athletes that laid the foundation for Xterra in Hawaii,” added Cousens.
“It was their spirit of adventure that put Xterra on the map more than two decades ago, and it’s that same spirit inspiring us into the future now.”
