The 2024 supertri (formerly known as the Super League Championship Series) series is almost over for another year, with just one race left to contest in Saudi Arabia.
So here’s everything you need to know about that final event, which athletes will be racing, and how to catch every second of the lightening-quick action…
What happened in the 2023 Super League Championship Series?
At the first round in London, Alex Yee finally got that home win, breaking the tape ahead of teammate Jonny Brownlee in second.
In the women’s race, Luxembourg’s Jeanne Lehair was the surprise winner in front of Sophie Coldwell in second and the USA’s Taylor Spivey in third.
The second round in Toulouse, France, was replete with crashes and controversies! But the overall spoils in the women’s Triple Mix race went to GB’s Kate Waugh, getting the better of the Léonie Périault and Emma Lombardi on home soil.
In the men’s race, Hayden Wilde made an unforced error and was handed a penalty, one that Frenchman and eventual winner Léo Bergere should also have received. Jonny Brownlee took another silver, meaning he led the series heading into Malibu, where…
Cassandre Beaugrand and Hayden Wilde, both fresh from finishing runners-up in the World Series, won the US round over the Eliminator format.
In the final round, in Saudi Arabia, a decisive short chute decision handed Léo Bergere the title over Wilde in second. For the women, GB’s Kate Waugh, who had been in third place before the start of the race, was elevated to the title after finishing second behind winner Beaugrand – Waugh’s 44 season points was tied with Lehair but the GB athlete was awarded the Championship by having a superior most recent result.
Where’s the next supertri race?
The fifth and final round of the 2024 supertri takes place in NEOM, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday 3 November.
Which race format will athletes race in NEOM?
For the 2024 supertri, all races have been contested over the Enduro format.
The Enduro is considered the most brutal format of all. Requiring endurance and tactics, the Enduro is a non-stop burst of nine back-to-back triathlon disciplines – a 300m swim, 4km bike, 1.6km run – without any breaks.
The easiest way to think about it is swim-bike-run repeated continuously three times in a row, or over three Stages.
A focus on speed is a key demand of the Enduro because any athlete who falls more than 90secs behind the leader will be eliminated.
There are three Short Chutes up for grabs – for the first athlete across the Mount Line after the swim on Stage 1, for the first athlete across the Mount Line after the bike on Stage 1 and for the first athlete across the Mount Line at the end of Stage 1.
Short Chutes are won for a Team and awarded to an athlete during the race by their Team Manager. Short Chutes are to be taken on the first lap of the run in Stage 3. No team can win more than one Short Chute.
