Merrell CP Paragon

These caused some positive murmurings from our support crew thanks to the flexible forefoot. Trail shoes can often be a little too sturdy for those of us looking for a bit of pace, but the cut of these shoes and their responsiveness, thanks to a dual-density midsole, is very good.

The aggressive outsole is also more than adequate for pretty much any trail running that Britain can offer. Okay, you might wish for something sturdier for a long slow slog, but if you’re looking to take part in, say, a fell race, then these would be suitable.

What’s also pleasing is that the Paragon is made from recycled materials that use 50% less water and energy to produce than the materials in standard trainers, as well as incorporating synthetic fibres that eliminate harmful chemicals.

One point to note, though, is the sizing. The size 10s we tested were more of a 9, so if you’re shopping by mail order be warned!
