Croatian city of Pula to host new Ironman 70.3 race
Athletes will finish in a Roman amphitheatre – a first for M-dot races
If you’re looking for a new middle distance race in sunny European climes then search no more – Ironman has just launched a 70.3 race for 2015 in the ancient Croatian city of Pula.
Pula sits on the south of the Istrian peninsula in a well-protected bay on the Adriatic coast. It counts ancient ruins aplenty thanks to its 3,000-year history including the Roman-built Pula Amphitheatre, which will host the finish line – a first for Ironman races.
The race will start on 20 September with a swim in the Blue Flag-awarded bay, followed by a fast one-loop bike course through several small picturesque villages and vineyards before making its way back to the marina of Pula.
The relatively flat three-lap run course will lead athletes through the town past attractions such as the Augustus temple and the triumphal arc and towards a finish in the amphitheatre.

It will also offer 30 age-group slots to the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships, being held in Australia’s Sunshine Coast in September 2016 as part of a week-long triathlon festival.
