In pics: Britain’s Jon Albon crowned world’s top obstacle course racer
25-year-old overcomes fire pits, barbed wire crawls and more to win Spartan Race World Championship in Vermont, USA
It’s official – British obstacle racer Jonathan Albon has been named the world’s top obstacle racer, after winning the Spartan Race World Championship in Vermont, USA earlier last weekend.
The 25-year-old from Essex raced against some of the fittest athletes on the planet over 12 miles of brutal hills, mud and water, rope climbs, barbed wire crawls, log carries, fire pits and much more.
Covered in mud and bruises, he crossed the finish line in a time of 3:23:15, ahead of runner-up Ryan Atkins (Canada) and third-placed athlete Cody Moat (US).
“It was the biggest race of my life and an honour to compete alongside the best,” said Jonathan afterwards. “I really enjoyed the experience. The win was by no means comfortable and I had to push myself to the limit to get across that line first.”
Jonathan has already racked up countless wins in the fast-growing sport of obstacle racing, including the Rat Race Dirty Weekend, The Nuts Challenge, Spartan Beast and The Wolf Run, and remains unbeaten in 2014.
