Review: Zoot Ultra Run Icefil run top
You can’t substantiate much of the science, but still a wonderful run top
Zoot have a history of innovation, from creating the world’s first tri-suit to their recent run shoes that feature a Boa closing system more commonly seen on bike shoes.
This top continues that game-changing theme. The name derives from IceFil technology, which claims to reduce skin temperature by around 3°C using Xylitol yarn, whose natural sugar alcohol provides a cooling sensation when wet.
This seems to be backed up by Zoot’s 2010 research where athletes using Xylitol arms were 3°C cooler than ‘exposed’ runners after a 30min run. Skin temperature isn’t an instant correlation of core temperature, so how effective it is physiologically remains to be seen.
What is clear is that it’s one of the most comfortable tops on test, primarily due to the microdenier polyester weave on the front that feels like you’re running naked. Mesh panelling on the back increases ventilation, and as for the fit: brilliant.
