Best lightweight running shoes 2014

Six of this year's best lightweight running shoes tested, rated and reviewed

Saucony Fastwitch 6

We recommend the best lightweight running shoes we’ve reviewed in the past 12 months…

Ahh, the heady days of a simple run shoe market. Where once we’d happily prescribe cushioned trainers for training and lightweight versions for racing, the inexorable rise of minimalist run shoes – now a core part of every run shoe manufacturer’s range – has muddied the triathlon waters.

But if you’re truly looking to peak on race day, lightweight run shoes are still your best option. With that in mind, we take a look at five of the best lightweight running shoes on the market in 2014. On your marks…

Adidas Adizero Adios Boost

220’s rating (review here): 86%

A highly impressive shoe that’s much more than mere marketing, these claim to offer the “highest energy return in the industry” thanks to around 2,000 ‘energy capsules’ made from thermoplastic polyurethane, which provide a springy stride without sacrificing feel or weight.

Brooks T7 Racer

220’s rating (review here): 88%

With a pedigree that includes Kona glory thanks to Chrissie Wellington, these are one of the most reliable and fastest run shoes around. Featuring asymmetrical lacing to wrap the foot securely in place, they feel stable and offer a perfect balance of speed and responsiveness.

Mizuno Hitogami

220’s rating (review here): 89%

In a vibrant (nay, garish) sea of run shoes, the understated looks of these Mizunos is a pleasant surprise – but not as revelatory as the ride, which offers rewarding feedback, smooth landings and a sub-240g weight for a men’s size 10.5.

On Cloud

220’s rating (review here): 83%

Offering a comfy, fast ride, these feature very springy ‘Zero Gravity’ foam on the outsole designed to absorb stress before releasing that stored energy to maximise toe-off. Also featuring elastic laces and a fine fit.

Saucony Fastwitch 6

220’s rating (review here): 86%

A more ‘traditional’ run shoe that tips the scales at 224g for a men’s size 10.5, these positively encourage you to unleash a faster cadence. They also feature Saucony’s ‘FlexFilm’ uppers, which match the flex of the foot superbly.
