Review: Mako Xtreme wetsuit

Very flexible, comfortable suit that performs to a high level, featuring a reverse top-down zipper and great buoyancy

Mako Xtreme wetsuit

Winner of our 2013 wetsuit grouptest ‘Best in Test’ award, the top-of-the-range Mako Xtreme suit scored highly for flexibility, comfort and buoyancy. Thankfully the 2014 model has not messed with a winning formula.

Yamamoto Aerodome neoprene in the chest and the front of the legs provides great buoyancy so that you sit very flat in the water, while the ankles and wrists are cut relatively high to assist with a quick transition.

A reverse (top-down) zipper is a bit harder to do up, but it does mean it can’t be accidently tugged undone in the mêlée of the swim leg. And although it has a very low-cut and soft neckline, the seal does a surprisingly good job of keeping the water out without feeling restrictive.

It’s clearly quite an investment at the better part of £500, but the phrase ‘you get what you pay for’ springs to mind.
