British paratriathletes scoop four golds in sunny Hyde Park
Lauren Steadman ends Faye McClelland's three-year winning streak at WTS London, as GB paratriathletes win 11 medals overall
British athletes laid their mark emphatically on WTS London this morning with 11 medals for the GB Paratriathlon Team including four golds, as Lauren Steadman finally ended Faye McClelland’s three-year winning streak in the PT4 category.
Chris Goodwin (PT5), Melissa Reid (PT5) and Jane Egan (PT1) were the other gold medal winners so far today; the elite men’s race is due to start at 2:30pm today, followed by the women at 4:05pm (preview here).
“I’m feeling pretty happy at the moment,” said Steadman post-race. “If you would have told me I’d beat a four times world champion today I wouldn’t have believed it. She is tough, she is hard to beat. The whole way round I was petrified that she was going to catch me. I like racing her though, she is a top racer.”
With the sun shining down on Hyde Park today, ITU world champion Chris Goodwin described conditions as “perfect” for his race against fellow Brit David Ellis, also a world champion but now the visually impaired and blind categories have been combined they were racing for just one gold medal today.
Ellis said afterwards: “Being here has brought back great memories. I feel part of something, GB are probably the best nation in triathlon with the best people in world helping us perform at our best.”
