Emma Pooley says it’s “nuts” that tri bronze paid her more than any cycling gold

Olympic silver medallist reveals her bronze at Challenge Philippines last February paid more than any bike race she has ever won

Challenge Philippines

British athlete Emma Pooley has said she thinks it’s “nuts” that she received more prize money for taking bronze in Challenge Philippines last February than in any of the many bike races she has won in nearly a decade of professional competition.

Pooley, who won a silver medal for time trial at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, told BBC Sport: “I’m not trying to be whingy. I love sport and I know it’s a privilege to do it, and that’s why I do it – I’ve got the opportunity and I’m very grateful for it. But, occasionally, it seems strange when the prize money for coming third at a triathlon in the Philippines is more than the prize money I’ve ever won in a bike race. That’s nuts to me.”

The former time trial world champion, 31, added that the four-figure prize money from taking gold at last year’s Lausanne Marathon in Switzerland also surpassed that of any bike race she has won. As a rider for pro cycling team Lotto-Belisol, her next bike race will be the women’s Flèche Wallone tomorrow (23 April).

In a recent interview with 220 Triathlon, Pooley revealed that other bike races she is targeting this year include the Giro and the Commonwealth Games, while triathlons planned for this year will include Embrunman on 15 August in France.
