British age-group team claim 12 golds in sprint finals

Over 500 GB age-groupers race on sprint course

The Great Britain Age-Group Team were celebrating a major medal haul yesterday (Friday 13 August) in the ITU Sprint Triathlon Age-Group World Championships, after claiming 12 gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals in London’s Hyde Park.

Lauren York (competing in the Under 20 category) was the first British female to cross the finish line, although a tough international field meant she finished ninth in her age-group.

Lauren commented: “It feels amazing, I really enjoyed the bike and I was catching a lot of people. I was a little bit behind on the swim, so I need to work on that. It’s amazing to be on home ground and everybody shouting: ‘Go GBR’, it really lifts you up.”

Dawn Vaughan, Assistant Team Manager for the Great Britain Age-Group Team, added: “I am just so proud of them all, it’s been a really tough race because of the weather conditions, but they have all performed to their best. This venue is incredible and I don’t think any of the other nations will have ever competed in a city that offers so much.”

This tally adds to the 10 gold, 10 silver and seven bronze claimed by the British age-group squad in the ITU Aquathlon Age-Group World Championships earlier in the week (11 September). For full results please visit www.triathlon.org.

The next age-group races to take place will be the ITU Standard Distance Triathlon Age-Group World Championships on Sunday – more coverage to follow…

Since then, she’s reported live from almost every major triathlon across the globe, including the Ironman World Championships, 70.3 Worlds, six ITU Worlds, Challenge Roth, the 2014 and 2022 Commonwealths, the London and Paris Olympics and the Rio Paralympics, to name but a few. Name a pro and chances are she’ll have interviewed them, so, unsurprisingly, she’s our go-to pro-athlete expert on the team.
