Ali Brownlee superb in Stockholm
Everything to race for in Hyde Park finals after thrilling WTS stage
Great Britain’s Alistair Brownlee notched up another emphatic win in Stockholm last weekend to take his place at the top of the WTS leaderboard, despite being “dead on legs” in the final stages of the race.
Brownlee senior was first out of the water, followed closely by Javier Gomez (ESP) and younger brother Jonathan Brownlee, before kicking off a solo break in the eighth lap of the bike leg. Alistair held on to his 20-second lead during the run to cross the line in 1:43:13.
“I just did all I could to win really, I knew my running wasn’t quite where I wanted it to be so I had to do a bit of something on the bike, but I got off the bike and thought ,‘oh no, I’ve had it here’,” Alistair said after the race.
“I just kept going and I actually felt quite good on the second and third laps but the last lap of the run I was just a man dead on legs.”
Gomez took second place with 1:43:27, followed by Jonathan Brownlee with 1:43:27, setting the stage for a nail-biting final in London next month.
It was a mixed day for the other British men, with only David McNamee finishing inside the top ten (1:46:23). Mark Buckingham and Adam Bowden did not finish.
