Garmin Forerunner 610

A powerful run training tool but we'd spend £50 more and get the 910XT...

The USP of the Forerunner 610 is its touchscreen, and although this can make initial set-up slow if you’ve got big fingers, it does make scrolling on-the-go easy.

That said, with four customisable data fields per screen, the need for scrolling is minimal. As a heart rate monitor it performs well. The strap is super comfortable, syncing is blip free, and you can program five customised HR zones for both running and cycling.

Recall on the unit is rudimentary but, once home and using the wireless ANT+ stick, you can dump your session into Garmin Connect and analyse to your heart’s content.

As you’d expect, the GPS functions are impressive, and it’s slim and stylish for all-day wear. It’ll talk to speed/cadence sensors but, for cycling, the display is just too small. It’s a great watch but as it lacks a multisport function and isn’t swim suitable, we’d still opt for the 910XT (reviewed issue 267).
