Running Doc’s Guide to Healthy Running

There’s nowt worse than an injury raining on your training parade, so whether you need healing or just want to prevent injury in the future, we’d recommend reading this. It begins by outlining the benefits of exercise, and helps you to understand how your body changes and adapts to endurance exercise.

The author, Dr Maharam (aka the ‘Running Doc’), has a knack of breaking things down into manageable chunks so your head doesn’t explode with information. Every injury that you could possibly imagine (including sudden death) is covered, with a quick guide for each that outlines the symptoms, how it occurs and the likely treatment. Sadly, it offers no cure for mortality.

There are also plenty of tips on nutrition, warm- and cold-weather racing, and common runners’ issues like runner’s trots and athlete’s foot. No matter what your level, there’s something for everyone in this book. Even if it’s just left in your bookcase for reference, it’s a must-have if you want to run pain free and enjoy the ride.
