Ironman arrives in Sweden for August event set in country's south-east

The inaugural Ironman Sweden/Kalmar will be held on August 18 2012. We spoke to the organisers this week for a quick update (our columnist Martyn Brunt is heading out to race in the summer).

Tomas Gustavsson informed us that the organisers have been hosting a race in Kalmar since 1994, which drew 60 competitors. Fast forward to 2011 and 700 competitors were ling up to race in the Kalmar Strait, five hours south of Stockholm and near the island of Oland.

For 2012, Ironman athletes will swim 3.8km in the Kalmar Strait, complete 180km on their bikes in typical Swedish scenery and run 26.2km through the beautiful historic town center past Kalmar Castle, before they finish at the main square of Kalmar.
