The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has announced the addition of the Liverpool Triathlon to its 5150 Series. Scheduled for Sunday 26 June, the event joins a calendar of races in locations such as New York, Miami, Frankfurt and Zurich.

The Liverpool Triathlon will offer qualification points for the Hy-Vee Triathlon Championships in Iowa, USA, to both professional and amateur athletes and professional athletess will also vie for a $25,000 prize purse.

“When we established the race in 2009, we were confident it would be a major addition to the UK triathlon calendar because of its unique location and the incredible local support,” said Kevin Stewart, event director.

“To be a part of the 5150 Series in its inaugural year is not only a testament to our success locally, but also to our impact internationally. This is a great achievement for the event and the city.”

The Liverpool Triathlon will begin with an enclosed dock swim followed by a fast bike on closed roads that take cyclists past some of Liverpool’s historic monuments. Participants will finish with a run around the city’s World Heritage sites of the Kings Waterfront and Three Graces, which provide convenient viewing areas for spectators to cheer on athletes.

The event should entice top professional and amateur athletes but will also aim to suit novices with sprint, super sprint and relay options. Organisers are offering various registration packages with options including wetsuit rental and a training day for beginners that will take place on Sunday 27 Feb, at the Wavertree Aquatics Centre.
