Brooks Trance 9

Cushioned, responsive and supportive, these shoes are for triathletes with mild to moderate pronation. Running in that category has, until recently, meant enduring a stiffer, non-responsive shoe. But, thankfully – excuse the pun – change is afoot, with the Trance 9 a top-of-the-range option.

Key areas such as breathability and grip are both acceptable, making these the type of shoe you’d be happy putting in some big miles in. In terms of technology, the shoe features Brooks’ Progressive Diagonal Rollbar (PDRB), which is designed to deliver cushioning while remaining supportive and allowing heel-to-toe transition – which is what we found.

In terms of testing, the only real fault to report was the toe box, which was on the narrow side for those, like our tester, with a wider foot.
