Shimano TR31 SPD-SL

Despite a middling price tag, these tri shoes from Shimano offer performance and comfort that’s little different to their more expensive offerings.

Upon opening the box, these shoes instantly feel durable and well built; they’ve a glass-fibre reinforced sole that’s relatively stiff and a low profile (if you want the carbon sole, the TR51 will meet your needs). As a bulky synthetic leather upper has been used, the TR31 lack a little in ventilation, but they do have a large ‘straight through’ drainage hole in the sole to help combat this. Sockless comfort is good but for longer distances we feel you may have problems with pressure build-up.

We loved the big single-strap closure, as it was really quick and secure to fasten. It also made the TR31 easy to get in and out of. As an added touch, they also boast a really big pre-shaped heel loop for easier on-bike donning.
